Hotel Reservations - Cancellation Fee

We were driving from Massachusetts to North Carolina for my sister's graduation.  Intending to stop in Maryland for the night, we found ourselves wide awake and ready to complete the journey around 9pm.  As we all know, hotel reservations must be canceled, at the very latest, by 6pm the night of the reservation.  Here we were, three hours past that deadline and battling with whether or not it was worth losing the money.  With no explanation, my husband dialed the hotel, and gave me a sly glance as the front desk "reservationist" answered.

"It turns out I had the weekend wrong when I booked this night, can I change my reservation until next weekend?  And is there a charge for changing the reservation?"  He smiled and after a quick discussion of dates, reservation numbers, and queen-sized beds, hung up the phone, turned to me, and said, "Okay, now don't forget to call tomorrow and cancel this reservation."

We did, and it worked!  No charge since we were six days prior to the reservation, and no one was the wiser.
